From what I read and understand this was a can opener issued to U.S. Infantry. It was part of the mess kit in the Civil War Era. (1861-1865)
I was fortunate enough to locate this at an estate sale. I learned on sale what I could about this piece and hopefully my research is somewhat accurate. I am anxious to hear from you if you have any more info regarding this wonderful piece of history!

I think it will make an excellent addition to a collection.
