This hammered Buenilum gravy boat or sauce boat has a most unique design in keeping with the exceptional design work of Frederick Buehner, a highly regarded German metalsmith and industrial designer who immigrated to the U.S. in 1929.
This serving bowl with it's attached underplate has a lustrous glow complemented by the beaded edging around the bowl and underplate, The modernist
handle on the sauce spoon is the same design only slightly smaller than on the sauce boat.
The Buenilum Aluminum company was founded as Buehner-Wanner by Buehner and his business partner, Franz Wanner, in Norwalk, Conn. in 1944. He developed a unique formula for using hammered aluminum, which he trademarked in 1933 as Buenilum, a cross between Buehner and aluminum. Buehner studied at the Deutscher Werkbund, or Work Federation, a German association of craftsmen, artists, architects and industrial designers, under the influential designer Bruno Paul.
Vintage hammered on sale Buenilum pieces with the initials BW flanking an image of a castle turret on the back, along with an imprint of the name Buenilum, are considered valuable antiques as of 2014. They are known for their workmanship and design; some are even found in museums.
