Vintage etching by prize-winning artist Gustav F. Goetsch (1877-1969), a self-portrait made in 1963, toward the end of his life. In this small etching, printed in black on tannish paper, the artist wears wire-rim glasses and a brimless hat, examining the viewer with a penetrating gaze.
Goetsch was a prolific painter and etcher who worked in Minnesota and Missouri for most of his life, both as an artist and as a teacher at Minneapolis School of Fine Arts and Washington University School of Fine Arts. His works are owned by numerous museums, including the Smithsonian, Chicago Art Institute, and St. Louis Art Museum.
The etching is signed along with bottom, and there is also a signature within the etching. This piece was verified in 2003 by Goetsch's son. The etching is in good condition, with some yellowing and darker spots visible around the edges. It's double matted in brown and tan and comes with a brown wood frame and glass.
Size: The etching is 3.5 inches wide x 3.9 inches deep. The frame is 11 inches wide x 11.5 inches tall.
