Simbircite-Ammonite Geode, ID 2175, 66x49 mm
Simbercite or Simbircite from the Russian city of Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) is one of those jaw-dropping gemstones that leave everyone breathless. The first records of this mineral are date back to 1765, but it received its current name only in 1985. They are beautiful, rich, and understated, amber colour, with shades of brown, white, red, or green. It is an agatized material that fills in chambers of the Ammonite Lamberticeras sp. with a complex mix of iron & magnesium-rich calcite (СаСО3), aragonite, pyrite, marl, chabazite, and quartz. The veins of pyrite were originally the bone on sale of the ammonite. Formed over 160 million years ago, Simbircite with pyrite is both a gemstone and fossil.
