Antique Hand Painted Kingdom of Leon Spanish Pottery Charger Plate with Lion Rampant, Rustic Kitchen Decor on sale Southwestern, Leo Zodiac Gifts
Here we have a fabulous old Spanish Majolica pottery charger with the Lion Rampant representing the Kingdom of León, with that kingdom's symbol of the lion. The plate came from the estate of a woman on sale whose home was filled with old Spanish pieces. This unsigned piece was made circa late 1800s to early 1900s, the blue paint still vibrant. This is large plate, and there is some flaking along the rim, which was filled in with blue marker or paint. The symbol of the lion in the center is similar to that found on the Spanish Coat of Arms. Note that the lion on this plate is not crowned, which it is in Coat of Arms. Also note that you can make out what appears to be a very obscure set of wings coming off the lion's shoulder, which would actually lead us to believe it is a Griffin (or Gryphon), that majestic create that since Medieval times represents the king of beasts (lion) and the king of birds (eagle). I have not found anything like this plate, and with tin glazes, colors can maintain their vibrancy for decades if not centuries. The plate could be much older than estimated.
Measures just under 12" in diameter and 1" tall. Weighs just under 2.5 pounds unpacked. See Photos 7 and 8 for close up of the type of flaking the bowl has. And do know that there is crazing and areas of bubbles that happened in the glazing process. No cracks.
Beautiful, collectible Majolica!
