This is a very rare example of Samuel Freeman's popular legal guidebook for Massachusetts' local officials entitled "The Town Officer..." It contained guidance for town selectmen, clerks, treasurers, tax collectors, etc. This book went into several editions, this copy being printed in Boston in 1808 by J.T. Buckingham for the publishers Thomas & Andrews. It has copies of both the state constitution and the U.S. Constitution, as well as forms to use for different matters. This has the signature of a former owner, Elisha K. Josselyn (1772-1857), who lived in the town of Pembroke, Plymouth County, MA. He was a prosperous farmer, but who was assigned a guardian in 1850, having gone insane. He purchased the book for for 7 shillings & 6 pence on October 14, 1811. Josselyn left pressed flowers in pages 131, 195, 235, & 255. The book weighs 11.1 oz. It measures 4.25" x 7" x 1.5". Great book that is on sale 215 years old that would make a wonderful gift for an attorney or historian or history lover.
