A Mother's Bouquet

I have nothing to give you that would compare to all that you've given me
Even these chosen words will prove inadequate and poor
To properly express all the poetry and aching beauty
That you've pressed with your fingertips into my soul
And the liquid notes of music you've poured into my heart
I wish that I could present to you something rare and exquisite
Like a supernatural bouquet of blossoms
Tender, fragrant and vibrant that would never fade
So that you could inhale the aroma of my gratitude
So that you would know the depth of my love for you
The most noble and unselfish of women
Each flower would represent a precious moment in my life…
I'd give you a white Carnation for the gift of breath
And pastel Hyacinth for soothing my sodden cries
For pacing the floor, while the stars glistened like jasper
Completely ignored by your sleep deprived eyes
I'd hand you a spray of Lavender for hours spent in the rocking chair
For the repetitive nursery rhymes and lullabies sung off key
Your bouquet would include Dandelions with wild manes
And bashful Buttercups for my first steps and babbled words
I would give you perfumed Peonies with velvet petals, too numerous to count
For melting ice cream cones, dirty knee kisses, sticky hand prints
And for chasing away the nightmares but instilling the dreams
There'd be enormous Sunflowers with faces bent in reverie
For all the times you prayed earnestly, cheered me on
Or worried silently and applauded my wholehearted, childish attempts
I'd give you sprigs of Sweet Peas and Tiger Lilies
Because you believed in me, when no one else gave me a care
You mopped up my tears and steadied me through storms
When words became exhausted and my faith became threadbare
You didn't judge or lecture, you simply were there
Marigolds as bright as bursting Mangoes and Dahlia blooms
Represent your stepping back, so I could stretch my wings
I can still see your silhouette beneath a faded denim sky
Wwith both arms outstretched
Beckoning me to surrender to the safety of your embrace
You encouraged me to brush myself off, more times than I can count
You've taught me to reach higher and stand up straight
And to blow kisses that land wherever I aim
Mom, you are worth more to me than all the Gardenias, Nasturtium and Violets
That the earth could ever grow
You are as lovely as the most crimson Rose at midday
And I will always love you so!
