Adjustable 1970s clip on sale on pastel yellow table working desk lamp wall light gooseneck brass Hala Zeist Dutch mid century design H. Busquet
In this listing we are pleased to offer a classic and elegant clip on desk lamp working light from the Dutch company Hala Zeist.
The designer is Herman Busquet, the founder of Hala in the town of Zeist.
This lamp has a beautiful color combination of a pastel light yellow, pure brass and white.
The clamp clip on part is coated yellow too.
This lamp is a model of the 1970s. The combination of a one-piece aluminum shade made in two levels with the bottom part in a color and the upper part white is something they used in several of their lamp designs, especially wall lamps, clip on desk lights and wall lights. There are both cylindric and conically shaped shade versions and some with perforations in the rim of the colored part.
This is a conically shaped version.
The lamp is not marked but this is a well documented Dutch design classic.
The clip on part/clamp allows you to clip it on table tops, shelves, supports, etc. of up to 5 centimeters / 1.97 inches in thickness. On the bottom side of the clamp there is a key hole cut out, making it equally possibly to hang this lamp on your wall.
The flexible brass gooseneck tube that connects the clamp to the shade allows you to put this lamp in nearly every desired position.
The lamp takes 1 E27 bulb with screw type fitting.
We have fully rewired this lamp with not only a new lamp cord of 161 centimeters / 63.38 inches and 2-pin flat European plug but also a brand new bulb holder so the lamp is now ready for decades to come.
We have not added an inline switch to the cord - as the future owner may need it at a specific distance from the lamp or not at all - but we are happy to do so free of charge. Just let us know when you order this lamp and at which distance from the lamp you would like it to be.
The lamp was designed for a 220/230 volts network but with adjustments can of course be used anywhere in the world.
About the company
Hala started in 1932 as an importer of German bulb factory workshop lamps (which were made at the HAnnoversche LAmpenfabrik GmbH, and where the name "HALA" was derived from), but soon developed into a producer of quality fittings and lamps. Hala was more than its larger competitors dependent on the artisan qualities of the metal workers. Forced by the late 1930s recession the company was forced to simplify (later baptized "modernize") its designs and standardize its parts.
The German and Dutch Hala existed next to each other and made and sold the same lamps or perhaps interchanged. However the German Hala ceased business operations somewhere in the 1960s.
After the second world war the people behind the Dutch "Stichting Goed Wonen (Association for Good Living)" were looking for simple, affordable and embellished interior products, and Hala founder and industrial designer H.Th.J.A. (Herman) Busquet rose to the occasion. Like no other lighting company in the Netherlands Hala was symbol for the economy of modernism in the fifties and sixties.
The most iconic Hala/Busquet lamp became the cute little Pinocchio lamp, the most sought after in the mid century market became the lamps from his solar series (zonneserie) and the 144 desk lamp became his overall biggest sales success. But Herman Busquet's work was much larger than these three series: he literally designed hundreds of lamps and for example his scissors wall lamps were sold by the thousands as well.
Herman Busquet retired from his work and company in the second half of the 1950s but the company successfully continued operations.
Hala lamps from the 1950s to 1970s are highly appreciated for their typical mid century modern designs.
The company had a restructuring in the 1980s and eventually moved to the nearby city of Amersfoort. The company continued to make lamps for the home and reedited some of Herman Busquet designs, such as the famous model 144. In 2011 the then main owner and CEO of Dijkstra Lampen merged his holding company with the holding company of Hala Zeist's then active CEO and shareholder (besides a venture capitalist). These two men got into serious conflict which ushered in years of arguments, legal costs and losses and ultimately into the bankruptcy of Hala in 2013/2014.

Condition:
Good condition.
This around 50 year old Hala classic is in a very agreeable condition with some signs of age and use.
The yellow coated part of the shade has one short dent line on the rim just before the fold but is otherwise dent free. The front rim has very minor deformations (in it not being a perfect circle) but these are so minor that in daily use they do not stand out.
The yellow coating has a bit of wear. There are 2 rubbing patches where the white coating below the yellow comes through. One is next to the dent and the other is behind the gooseneck tube.
Next, the yellow paint can be lightly patchy here and there and there are a few colored rubbing lines.
On the other hand there a no scuffs and no scratches that are deep enough to reach the aluminium.
The white coated back part of the shade is in excellent condition.
The white coating on the inside is in very good condition. It is also lightly patchy with an incidental rubbing line but here again there is no paint loss.
The gooseneck tube is in great condition. It is still perfectly rigid as on sale to handle all positions and there is no blemish .
The clip on clamp has natural wear to the yellow coating, mostly at the rims, but we find the coating in surprisingly good condition without any real paint loss at all !
The beak of the clamp used to be lined with a paper felt lining to prevent the clamp from scratching on the surface it was stuck on. This lining is gone although glue traces of it remain. We do advise adding a new lining if you are going to use the clamp as the spring system is still surprisingly powerful/tight and will leave its marks on for example wood.
As stated the wiring is a brand new replacement by us.
The brass bolt on the backside is a bit rough from screwdrivers leaving their marks.
