on sale Unique and rare Victorian era, hand carved Whitby jet bar brooch. Whitby jet is mostly used in mourning jewelry. Its history dated back to the 1800s. When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria wore Whitby Jet jewelry in remembrance of him, quickly making it the etiquette to accessorize the period's mourning dress with jewelry made from this special gemstone. Queen Victoria valued the gemstone so that the only jewelry allowed to be worn in court during this period was Whitby Jet.
