on sale A small, handmade piece of Southwest pottery, hand painted in black, white and reddish brown with yellow accents on the animal's face. This is a lovely example of an animal effigy vessel, probably Native American pottery from the 1960s or ‘70s. The piece is small (fits in the palm of your hand): about 3” tall by 2-1/2” wide. Condition is excellent.
I am not certain what animal this vessel represents; it may be an aquatic mammal like an otter, beaver, or seal, all of which play a role in Native American lore. The symbols and designs are intriguing; they are reminiscent of those used by the Pueblos. Examining the design closely, I can see what might be the artist's initial worked in the design on the animal's tail.
