Most of us have probably seen images of Wildebeest on television. The most common pictures, I think, are the scenes of them during migration as they move across the African continent. They are travelling in search of new lush grass, following the rain. Like all animals, humans included, they need to eat. I'm always fascinated by the herd instinct especially when they leap off steep embankments in their hundreds. Some fall to their death, most survive and run with the rest of the pack in search of food and water. It's not surprising that there are lions nearby, ready to pick off the weak ones or feast on the less fortunate. I was lucky to see this wildebeest standing apart fa m his herd. I was visiting a small private game reserve in South Africa, at the time. He was feeding on the grass and more interested in that than anything else. Our guide assured us that Wildebeest don't normally attack humans, unless cornered. We had been watching him for a few minutes when he became aware of us. Perhaps the wind blew our scent in his direction. Whatever, he began to stare at us. He wasn't even startled by the click of the camera. As he looked over his shoulder at us, it was almost as though he had been prompted to pose. This was a great encounter.
