Sunflower Picture - Yellow Wildflowers on sale - Black-Eyed Susan - State Flower - Edible Flowers - Grassland Giclee Print
"Black-Eyed Susan Field"
As members of the sunflower family, Black-eyed Susan's display distinct yellow petals with a brown center. The height and petal size are much smaller than sunflowers, but the petals sill have the same beautiful yellow.
These flowers became the inspiration for a college and the state of Maryland.
In 1912, the University of Southern Mississippi chose the gold and yellow as its school colors. A few years later in 1918, Maryland made the Black-Eyed Susan the state flower.
Because they are such well-known flowers, it was a pleasant surprise to accidently stumble upon this large patch of flowers. They were surrounded by trees, making a shady and safe space for the flowers. Even though it was already fall, these flowers were still in full bloom and absolutely beautiful.
Besides its obvious beauty, Black-Eyed Susanes are edible and can be used for medicine. Its spring greens can be eaten once cooked and the juice that come from the were used to help relieve earaches!
How amazing that one small flower has inspired schools and states, food and natural medicine!
