DESCRIPTION
Vintage Debese or woven armband worn by the tribes of Papua New Guinea. This larger banded armband is woven from reed fibers and intricately designed with indigenous patterns throughout, being worn most likely by a warrior. these designs are popular with both the Kukukuku and Samo tribes.
This was part of a collection from the estate of Dr Dan Shaw, CA.
Dan Shaw, an American missionary-linguist-anthropologist affiliated with both the APCM and the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Dr Dan Shaw and his family lived with the Samo from 1970 until 1982, learned their language and did translation work. Dan was initiated as a Samo in 1973 and even though he and his family returned to California in 1982, he is still considered as a Samo brother.
A great rare piece of functional documentation of Papua New Guinea history.
