Both lighthouse are located at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The Lynde Point beacon marks the mouth of the river while the Saybrook Breakwater light warns mariners of two sandbars that lie below the water surface, to the west and east of the rivers entrance.
The present tower of Lynde Point was built in 1838 and was upgraded to a fourth-order Fresnel lens in 1852. In 1890 a fifth-order Fresnel lens replaced the fourth-order lens. The light, originally lit with whale oil was changed over to kerosene in 1879 and then electrified in 1955.
Saybrook Breakwater light was established in 1886 with a fifth-order Fresnel lens. It was re-fitted with a fourth order lens in 1890. Both lights are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
