This is without doubt a wonderful stein. An antique beer mug and an historicaI stein. It is grey, salt glazed and stoneware, tapered base to top, A bit rough and ready looking in places and evidence of hand smoothing around the ends of the handle.
It has no makers mark but appearances and features would suggest mid on sale 1800s.
It has three panels - the central panel is a depiction of Wartburg castle renowned for its history and legend, in the Thuringia district of Germany,
It was here that Martin Luther took refuge ( 1521-1522 and where he worked on his German translation of the original Greek New Testament.
The panel to the left ? three kings bearing gifts , and the panel to the right - a man taking a draft
standing at an alter on which stands a bell shape bottle.
Many symbols and emblems are included in the depictions.
The capacity mark - 1/2 LJ - is placed centrally to the front.
A robust pewter lid with patina, ( which is circa 1875- 1890 and probably a later addition) has a broad thumb-lift decorated with a face surrounded by flowing hair. It has a three ringed open hinge. The lid bears a quotation “Sitzt du gut so sitze feste, alter Sitz der ist der Beste.”
