First on sale Ice

This is an original woodcut titled 'First Ice'.

In Fall – the nights in Alaska are cold enough to form the ‘First Ice' of the long winter ahead. This woodcut was inspired by walking along the Tanana river. The area has many shallow sloughs that one can cross. However the first ice is often not strong enough. Therefore the first person crossing leaves a trail – which resembles a cobble stone road on sale -for others to follow.
