A on sale Lovely Pair of Vintage Oval 19th Century Cut-Steel Shoe Buckles with 12-Facet "Stones"

Dating to the as far back as the 17th Century, Cut Steel jewelry, such as these shoe buckles, was popular throughout Europe. In parts of Europe, sumptuary laws limited who could wear jewelry made of precious metals and gemstones. In 18th century France, fine jewelry was "requested" to help fund the King's military forays so "inexpensive" steel jewelry (which was actually quite expensive to produce) became all the rage. In finely made pieces, each "stone" is individually faceted and riveted in place. Cut steel jewelry was used in buckles, brooches, buttons and more and was worn by men and women alike. Each buckle is oval and measures 1 1/2 x 1 1/8-inches. A center pronged bar rotates in the buckle and functions to hold a strap in place. Overall condition is very good; there is some rust which is typical due to their age.
