Lester Howard Vaughan (1889-1961) is considered the most important American pewterer of the twentieth century. He started working with pewter at Reed & Barton in 1909. In 1915 he started his own full-time pewter business in Taunton, Massachusetts. Pewter was experiencing a revival in popularity in the 1920's and 1930's due to the Arts & Crafts Movement and Lester Vaughan was a prominent part of that revival. He designed all his own pewter and it's extremely well-made. These four matching candleholders of his from the 1930's have the simplicity of that era, which allows them to fit in with many different interiors.
One of these candleholders is pictured on the copy of a page from Vaughan's Pewter catalog, undated but published around 1930. It's third from the left in the front row. The base of each candleholder measures just under 4 inches in diameter and the candle cup has about a 3/4 inch wide opening; they weigh 5 ounces apiece. They are stamped on the bottoms with all three of his marks: his Arts & Crafts style monogram LHV: his name and town; and the eagle in an oval mark, which harks back to 19th century American pewter marks. Each one is in very good condition, with a pleasingly mellow patina but no damage.

His work was exhibited at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Art Museum.
