Nelly de Grab was born in Vienna, Austria in 1899. She married into a wealthy Czechoslovakian family with roots in manufacturing. She and her family fled to Portugal to escape Nazi persecution. Settling in New York, Nelly began designing full, softly pleated skirts inspired by Portuguese textiles, and sold her first designs to Peck & Peck, a store on 5th Avenue.

By 1955, Nelly de Grab had become a large company, located on Seventh Avenue in New York, known for making coordinating separates that could mix and match. Many of Nelly's outfits could pass as dresses when worn together. Eventually, she brought that versatility and innovation to evening wear, designing separates in taffetas, brocades and velvets that were elegant, lightweight and of exceptional quality and style.
