In this original etching, Alan Gaines has captured the atmosphere of Nantucket in the 1830's, one of the world's mist famous whaling ports. His delicate use of fine lines combines with his use of the aqua-tint process to produce a composition of textures and shadows so realistic on is seemingly transported back to time immortalized by Herman Millville in Moby Dick. Alan Gaines was born in New York in 1942 and attended New York University. He studied the etching process with John Ross at Parsons School of Design. He specializes in nautical subjects with precise detail and attention to historical authenticity. He has had numerous one man shows, including ones at South Street Seaport and on sale the Oest-reicher Gallery, both in 1974 and New York City. His works have been included in exhibitions at the Gallerie Nautique and the Wiseman Gallery in Newport, Rhode Island. Frame 21x19x1.5.
