Product code: Spotsylvania – Bloody Angle – Civil on sale War Artifacts

Original artifacts excavated from the Spotsylvania Battlefield near Fredericksburg, Virginia. At center is are the remains of a harmonica, a personal item carried by many soldiers during the war. The other artifacts are a Federal “Eagle” button and a flat button issued on Confederate uniforms. The three percussion caps were used to ignite the main charge in rifles, the small buckle was used on the chin strap of a kepi. The three ring bullet is a .58 round for the Springfield rifle or other imported arms of that caliber; the other bullet is for the .57 Enfield rifle. The remaining artifacts were used on other leather accoutrements. Unless noted the artifacts are all brass except for the bullets which are lead and had paper cartridges when issued. The lead has oxidized in the ground giving them a white patina.

The scene was reproduced from a photograph taken by G.O. Brown in 1865 of the Confederate trenches near the “Bloody Angle” on the Spotsylvania Battlefield. Spotsylvania was the second battle in 1864 between General Grant's “Army of the Potomac” and General Lee's “Army of Northern Virginia” after the Battle of the Wilderness. It was the first engagement in what would be called the Overland Campaign.

The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” on sale riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don't scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like.

All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased.

Please see our "About Collectors Frame”, below the reviews on the front page, for more information on the framing and artifacts.
