This antique quill pouch made for a buffalo bladder is a rare find indeed! A unique, one-of-a kind find indeed! Before the introduction of glass beads by traders in the 1800s, quill work was a major decorative element. Plains Indians used dried buffalo bladders flattened and folded into thirds as cases for storing porcupine quills used in embroidery.
This pouch is hand sewn with what was once white fringed rawhide on each end. There is a small tear on the top of the pouch and 3 tiny holes on the back. See pictures for details.
I am unclear of the exact age of the pouch that came from an estate sale. It was in a curio cabinet with other items such as children posing on an Alaskan iceberg in 1935, a buffalo horn that had been discovered when digging a store foundation in the 1800s, and other fossils and artifacts. My guess is that this pouch is from the 1800s, or possibly early 1900s.
