on sale A rare, superb example of the prized pottery items handmade by Gugong Bong who worked for Abuja Pottery, Nigeria, in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Abuja Pottery items are highly sought after and catalogued in collections and museums (e.g., the British Museum) world wide. Abuja Pottery was set up with the direct guidance of British potter Michael Cardew (1901-1983), whose work was exhibited widely and awarded many honours. In 1950 the Nigerian authorities asked Cardew to become 'Pottery Officer' with the aim of improving the quality of the local work. He spent most of the next fifteen years there, having set up the Pottery Training Centre at Abuja. There were exhibitions of Abuja pottery in London in 1958, 1959 and 1962, and another in Lagos in 1960. Cardew and some of the African potters gave lectures and demonstrations in various parts of the world... Gugong Bong was one of the many potters who benefited from Cardew's teachings.
